3 Common Cold-Weather Issues That Can Hurt Your Smile

Cold weather brings cozy sweaters and hot drinks, but it also brings a unique set of challenges for your oral health. Here are three winter dental issues worth knowing about.

1. Tooth Sensitivity

Cold air can trigger sharp, short-lived pain in teeth with exposed roots or thin enamel. If you notice sensitivity when you step outside on a cold day, try breathing through your nose rather than your mouth. A toothpaste formulated for sensitivity can also help by blocking the microscopic channels in exposed dentin.

2. Cracked Teeth from Temperature Extremes

Going from a hot drink straight to cold air (or vice versa) causes rapid expansion and contraction of tooth structure. Over time, this can cause tiny cracks — known as craze lines — that may eventually develop into larger fractures. Try to avoid extreme temperature swings when possible.

3. Chapped Lips and Cold Sores

Dry winter air leads to chapped lips, and stress or cold-weather illness can trigger cold sore outbreaks (caused by the HSV-1 virus). Keep a good lip balm handy, and if you're prone to cold sores, talk to us — there are effective antiviral treatments that can shorten outbreaks.

Winter Oral Health Tips

  • Stay hydrated — indoor heating dries out your mouth, reducing protective saliva
  • Keep up with brushing and flossing even when your routine shifts
  • Schedule your winter cleaning if you haven't yet — we'd love to see you!
