5 Things Your Dentist Performs During Your Routine Checkup

Many patients think of a routine dental visit as just a cleaning — but a comprehensive checkup at Magnolia Family Dentistry involves a thorough examination of your entire oral health. Here are five key things we do at every visit.

1. Full Dental Examination

Dr. Burton examines each tooth individually for signs of decay, cracks, wear, and restorations that may need attention. She also evaluates your bite and jaw function. This is where early problems are found before they become expensive.

2. Oral Cancer Screening

Every routine visit includes a visual and physical screening of the soft tissues in your mouth — the cheeks, tongue, palate, floor of the mouth, and throat. Oral cancer has a dramatically better prognosis when caught early.

3. Periodontal (Gum) Assessment

Our hygienist measures the depth of the spaces (pockets) between your teeth and gums. Healthy pockets measure 1–3mm. Depths of 4mm or more indicate early gum disease.

4. Digital X-Rays

Annual X-rays (more frequent if you're cavity-prone) let us see what's happening between teeth and beneath the gumline — areas invisible to the naked eye. Our digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film.

5. Professional Cleaning

Our hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup that your toothbrush can't address, polishes tooth surfaces, and flosses every contact point. This is the foundation of cavity and gum disease prevention.

Is it time for your next checkup? We'd love to see you at Magnolia. New patients can take advantage of our $119 exam and X-ray special.
