Cosmetic Dental Bonding

Repair chips, gaps, and imperfections in a single appointment — no injections required.

Cosmetic dental bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin to repair or reshape teeth with remarkable versatility and speed. Unlike veneers (which require lab fabrication and two visits) or orthodontics (which take months), bonding is completed chairside in a single appointment — often without any anesthesia. It's one of the most underrated cosmetic dental procedures available.

What Cosmetic Bonding Can Fix

  • Chipped or cracked tooth edges
  • Small gaps and diastemas between teeth
  • Discolored or stained teeth that don't respond to whitening
  • Misshapen or irregularly sized teeth
  • Slight length discrepancies between teeth
  • Exposed root surfaces from gum recession (protective bonding)
  • Minor crowding or rotation — closing spaces without orthodontics

The Bonding Process

Bonding is usually completed in 30–60 minutes per tooth with no preparation of the tooth surface (in most cases). The tooth surface is lightly etched and a bonding agent is applied. Dr. Burton then applies composite resin in the exact shade matched to your surrounding teeth, sculpting it by hand to achieve the desired shape. The resin is cured with a UV light and then polished to a natural luster.

Bonding vs. Veneers — Choosing Right

Bonding is ideal for minor corrections on otherwise healthy teeth — chips, small gaps, slight shape irregularities. It's fast, affordable, and reversible (the tooth enamel is not removed). Veneers are better for more comprehensive smile transformations involving multiple teeth, more significant color changes, or situations where a more durable, stain-resistant result is needed. Dr. Burton will recommend the right approach at your consultation.

Longevity and Care

Composite bonding typically lasts 5–10 years with proper care before it may need touch-up or replacement due to normal wear and micro-chipping. Avoid habits that chip bonding: biting nails, chewing pen caps, opening packages with your teeth. Bonded teeth can be polished at your regular cleanings to restore their original luster. If bonding chips, it can usually be repaired quickly and affordably at a follow-up appointment.
