Tooth Replacement

Dental Bridges

A fixed, natural-looking solution for replacing one or more missing teeth.

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic that literally bridges the gap left by a missing tooth or teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) anchored to crowns on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. The result is a complete, natural-looking smile — fixed in place, no removal required.

How a Bridge Works

The teeth adjacent to the gap (abutment teeth) are shaped to accommodate dental crowns. These crowns anchor the bridge structure and hold the artificial replacement tooth (pontic) in the center. The entire bridge is cemented as a single unit, creating a fixed restoration that functions like natural teeth for eating, speaking, and smiling.

Types of Dental Bridges

  • Traditional bridge — most common; two crowns anchor one or more pontics; requires reshaping adjacent teeth
  • Cantilever bridge — anchored on only one side; used when only one adjacent tooth is available
  • Maryland bridge — minimally invasive; pontic is bonded to metal or porcelain "wings" on adjacent teeth without crowns
  • Implant-supported bridge — two implants support a bridge of three or more teeth; no natural teeth are reduced

Bridge vs. Implant — Which Is Right for You?

Implants are the gold standard for tooth replacement — they don't require modification of adjacent teeth and stimulate the jawbone to prevent bone loss. Bridges are a good option when the adjacent teeth already need crowns, when bone volume is insufficient for an implant, or when cost is a primary factor. Dr. Burton will discuss both options and help you decide what makes the most sense for your situation.

The Bridge Process at Magnolia

Getting a bridge typically takes two appointments. At the first visit, the abutment teeth are shaped, a digital impression is taken, and temporary crowns are placed. The dental lab fabricates your custom porcelain bridge (approximately 2–3 weeks). At the second visit, the bridge is tried in, adjusted, and permanently cemented. Dr. Burton ensures a perfect fit and bite before completing the process.

Caring for Your Bridge

Brushing twice daily is essential. Flossing requires a floss threader or water flosser to clean under the pontic where it contacts the gum tissue — this is the most important area to keep clean. Neglecting this area leads to bone loss, gum disease, and eventual failure of the bridge. We'll show you exactly how to clean your bridge at your placement appointment.
