When an Extraction May Be Necessary

• Severe decay that has destroyed too much tooth structure for restoration
• Advanced periodontal disease with significant bone loss causing tooth mobility
• Irreparable fracture below the gumline
• Failed root canal treatment in a tooth that cannot be retreated
• Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth
• Preparation for orthodontic treatment (crowding)
• Infection risk in immunocompromised patients where treatment isn't feasible

Simple vs. Surgical Extractions

A simple extraction is performed on a fully erupted tooth visible in the mouth. After thorough numbing with local anesthesia, the tooth is loosened with an elevator instrument and removed with forceps. Most simple extractions take 5–15 minutes. A surgical extraction is needed for teeth that are broken off at the gumline, have curved or fused roots, or are impacted (partially or fully beneath the gum tissue). These require a small incision and sometimes sectioning of the tooth to facilitate removal.

Sedation for Extractions

For patients with dental anxiety, complex surgical extractions, or wisdom tooth removal, we offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation to ensure complete comfort throughout the procedure. Most patients are surprised by how manageable a well-performed extraction is — but sedation is always available if you'd prefer a more relaxed experience.

After Your Extraction — Critical Aftercare

Following extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket — protect it for 72 hours. Do not smoke, spit forcefully, or drink through a straw (suction can dislodge the clot causing dry socket — a painful complication). Keep the area clean but gentle. Eat soft foods on the opposite side. Take prescribed or recommended pain relievers on schedule for the first 48 hours. Call us immediately if you develop severe pain days after extraction, fever, or significant swelling.
