Many of us enjoy the winter and cooler weather, but unfortunately, our teeth and gums do not always agree! Cold air, dry indoor heat, and seasonal habits can all take a toll on your oral health, leading to sensitivity, chapped lips, and other discomforts or problems. Here’s more about what causes these common issues and what you can do to protect your smile all season long.

Tooth Sensitivity

Cold air can cause teeth to contract slightly. If your enamel is worn or your gums have receded, the underlying dentin becomes exposed. Your dentin is connected to the nerves of your teeth, meaning it’ll lead to your teeth feeling more sensitive. It can become more noticeable when eating and drinking hot or cold items.

You can combat dental sensitivity by using a desensitizing toothpaste and brushing gently, as well as avoiding certain hot/cold foods. If things persist, it might be due to an underlying issue, and you should let your dentist know.

Dry Mouth

Cold weather often means more time spent inside with the heater cranked up. However, indoor heating can make the air you breathe much drier—leading to dry mouth. Saliva plays a critical role in washing away bacteria and neutralizing acids, meaning that less saliva will increase your risk of cavities.

Do your best to stay hydrated, whether you’re spending time indoors or outdoors. Drink water in favor of alcohol and caffeine, both of which can contribute to dryness. You can also use a humidifier inside your bedroom.

Chapped Lips

Windy, cold, dry air can also strip the moisture from your lips, leaving them chapped, cracked, or even bloody. Since lips don’t have oil glands like the rest of your skin, they’re extra-vulnerable to these issues. Patients who wear traditional braces usually experience this issue to a more severe degree.

You should stay hydrated to keep your mouth moist, and it also helps to use ChapStick or medicated lip balm. You should also try to protect your face while outdoors, so your lips are shielded from harsh wind.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues persistently, it could indicate there’s an underlying problem—meaning your smile might be more at stake than you realize. Speak with your dentist so that you can continue enjoying the cooler weather!
