Your dentist is an invaluable asset to keep your mouth healthy. However, they aren’t the only people to thank for your beautiful smile. Your dental assistant works along with your dentist to provide you with the best care possible. March 6-12th is Dental Assistants Recognition Week (DARW). It’s a time for dentists and patients to celebrate their dental assistants. Here are a few reasons to show your dental assistant some appreciation.
What is a Dental Assistant?
Dental assistants keep dental offices running smoothly. From sterilizing equipment to updating patient records, they handle a variety of administrative duties while also assisting patients and dentists.
A person must complete a training program to earn a certification or license, depending on state regulations. Generally, training takes about 1 year, allowing students to learn the anatomy of the mouth and various instruments used in dental care. They also learn safety and sterilization protocols, as well as various tasks related to patient care.
Preparation and Takedown
Dental assistants are responsible for preparing exam rooms between patients. They follow strict cleaning procedures to ensure everything is sterilized according to safety and infection protocols. They will set out sterilized instruments that may be needed during your appointment.
You can relax in the dentist’s chair knowing you’re in a clean and safe environment. After you leave your appointment, your dental assistant will perform the same routine for the next patient.
Assisting Your Dentist
Your dental assistant will begin your appointment by walking you to the exam room and learning more about any concerns you might have, which will be relayed to your dentist. Your dental assistant may take X-rays and other assessments to ensure your dentist has everything they need for a complete picture of your dental health.
They will be at the side of your dentist during your appointment for handling instruments, rinsing and suction, and many other small tasks for a smooth process.
Office Management
When your dental assistant isn’t helping you or your dentist, they are also responsible for various tasks around the office. They may schedule appointments, order supplies, or perform other administrative responsibilities. Overall, they are exceptional multi-taskers.
With your next cleaning and checkup right around the corner, take a minute to thank your dental assistant for helping you achieve your best smile. They are an extra set of hands and eyes to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
